With a metropolitan population of over 11 million inhabitants, Manila is the most densely populated city in the world and the site of one of the most famous boxing matches of all time: the 1971 Thrilla in Manila.  The Thrilla was the third and final match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and was ranked by ESPN as the 5th greatest sporting event of the century.  Ali was a conscientious objector of the Vietnam War and as a result, was stripped of his heavyweight title; however, Joe Frazier petitioned then-President Richard Nixon to restore Ali’s license, resulting in this bout of epic proportions.  Amidst a great deal of governmental and economic turmoil, the Thrilla in Manila ranks as one of the greatest fights of all time, with Ali emerging as the victor in a 15th round stoppage.  Not surprisingly, today’s Featured Firm comes to you from the site of the battle — we at Ballista Magazine are proud to present the modern day Thrillas of Manila, WOOZY Wear!

Co-founded in 2010 by reputable street artists Charlie San Jose (CHEW) and Jon Omar de Guzman (DOPE), the WOOZY coalition describes itself as “a premium lifestyle and street wear label with the goal of creating stylish, offbeat and original apparel”.  If you recall, another San Jose (Christian, brother of Charlie) was introduced as a previous Featured Face for his incredible illustration work — apparently, the San Jose gene pool is far deeper than my own (thanks, Mom and Dad!).  Notwithstanding, WOOZY apparel is stylistically cohesive yet incorporates individual elements from each designers’ repertoire, resulting in an incredibly unique yet legible brand.  As the global urban streetwear scene becomes increasingly diluted with poorly conceptualized and poorly executed artwork (posers, mostly), WOOZY’s screen prints are masterfully detailed and should stand as examples for the up-and-comers.  Excellent work!
