Attention, fans — Elvis is in the building. On this day in 1954, the King made his radio debut with his first recorded hit with Sun Records, “That’s All Right.” Speaking of “All Right”, today’s Featured Firm has a portfolio that is much more than alright: TOTeMs Architecture!
Headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, TOTeMs Architecture is a multi-disciplinary architecture and planning firm specializing in community oriented projects. The firm was established in 2002 by principal Todd Sweet, who was joined by fellow principal Jerry Sparkman in 2004. Under the watchful eye of these two design talents, TOTeMs claims to be “interested in work, not measured by size, but by its relevance to the owner, community and environment.” In a design landscape dominated by starchitecture and mega-projects, this community-oriented approach to design is a fresh take with obviously successful results. The firm has commissioned work in the industry sectors of residential, commercial, civic, and multi-family projects.
In our humble opinion, one of the most intriguing projects in the TOTeMs portfolio is their Bolt Barn — the project deviates from the traditional barn archetype in novel and innovative ways without “jumping the shark”, so to speak. While this beautiful project pushes the formal envelope, the firm also has the ability to work within tangible constructs to create lasting and appropriate civic and public safety works. In short, the firm has the wherewithal to know when (and when not) to flex their design muscles.
With recent June features on the pages of design media giants Dwell and ArchDaily, TOTeMs is on a roll — Ballista Magazine would recommend you get on board by checking out their website and Facebook pages!
