Tokidoki is a lifestyle brand that was founded in 2003 by Italian artist Simone Legno, inspired by Japanese culture and surprisingly headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Truth be told, the location of this manufacturer of apparel, footwear and accessories holds no consequence. Tokidoki is an internationally recognized label, whose “cult status has fueled high-profile collaborations with Karl Lagerfeld, LeSportsac, Onitsuka Tiger, Marvel, New Era, Hello Kitty, Fujitsu, Levi’s, Smashbox cosmetics, Xbox, T-mobile, Fornarina, Skullcandy and Medicom Toy.”
A ravenous fan base has grown up around the larger-than-life characters and designs of Simone Legno. In fact, Legno’s individual popularity was responsible for Tokidoki’s founding. According to Wikipedia, Simone Legno was listed on the The Independent‘s top ten “websites of the week” when co-founder of American cosmetics company Hard Candy, Pooneh Mohajer, and her husband Ivan Arnold, approached Legno with a possible business venture. The couple arranged for the artist to meet them in Los Angeles and the rest, as they say, is history.
Tokidoki’s product line, and Legno, are undoubtedly inspired by Japanese-culture, but we think the brand’s success lies the in the internationality of the designs. Tokidoki’s rogues gallery of characters are universal admirable, and the brand is quick to embrace emerging trends from around the globe. Tokidoki can be found in over 60 countries, and is distributed by Nordstrom, Macys, Fred Segal, Metropark, Karmaloop and approximately 1000 individual boutiques. Additionally, Tokidoki has flagship stores in Los Angeles, New York and Milan.
