Today’s feature is the writer, artist, inker, colorist, and letterer of “The Best Comic Money Can’t Buy”… God Hates Astronauts.
Ryan Browne is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and he holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts, Illustration from that prestigious institution. Ryan also attended the pre-college program at Maryland Institute College of Art, the RISD European Honors Program, and the Massachusetts College of Art. Since graduation Mr. Browne has been a prolific educator, designer, illustrator, and comics creator. He was an instructor at RISD, the Massachusetts College of Art, and the Boston Architectural College. Since 2007, Ryan has been a graphic artist for BerylMartin, creating digital painting, illustration, graphic design, and more for private businesses and non-profit organizations. Ryan has also illustrated comics for publishers like IDW, Archaia Press, and Devil’s Due, and his work has appeared in several comic anthologies. Though his most notable achievement to date may be the publication of his self-produced comics, God Hates Astronauts and Blast Furnace.
Ryan Browne’s latest self-produced comic, Blast Furnace, is an entertaining and ambitious project. Blast Furnace is the story of a recreational thief who operates under the pseudonym Blast Furnace. The comic is published online, like Ryan’s earlier project God Hates Astronauts, and it will be published daily, Monday through Friday, for one year! This demanding publication schedule spun out of Ryan’s success producing 24-Hour Comics, an annual event during which comic creators produce a complete 22 page comic in one day. The break-neck pace of Blast Furnace also gives Ryan the freedom to experiment with alternative storylines and ideas that arise from the creative process. Having published just 8 pages of Blast Furnace to date, Ryan has already taken a short diversion from the main story to discover what happens to one of the victims of Blast Furnace’s recreational theft.
In addition to creating comics, Mr. Browne is also an accomplished illustrator and graphic designer. Ryan’s illustrations maintain the dynamism found in his sequential storytelling work, just in a single image. The graphic design projects that Ryan showcases in his portfolio often incorporate the textures and coloring processes found in his comics. Likewise, Ryan’s illustration and design education have undoubtedly influenced his comics work. You can see influences from all of the disciplines Ryan has learned and mastered throughout his work.
