Nathan Sawaya is a New York-based artist who creates awe-inspiring works out of some of the most unlikely things: LEGOs. With a collection of over 1.5million bricks in his studio, Nathan has now become the envy of every child ever (and some adults). His work has been featured in collections around the world and is currently on exhibition in North America as part of a show titled, The Art of the Brick.
We at Ballista pride ourselves on exhibiting a wide range of artists with a diverse range of talents. Some of our features are showcased for their conceptual acumen, others for application of theory, and still others for execution. This feature is a celebration of execution, as Nathan’s sculptural and portraiture work is executed with a single and often rigid medium: the LEGO. That is where his work transcends into the realms of greatness — Nathan can inflect the recognizable nuances of his subjects despite working within a medium that is not conducive to detail. We have featured multiple “8-bit artists” and in a sense, Nathan is absolutely that…his work is just executed in the third dimension and on a large scale. Outstanding!
Nathan’s portfolio is as diverse as it is astounding, with pieces ranging from the abstract to realistic reproductions of high-profile celebrities. For more of Nathan’s work, please visit his personal website for the remainder of his sculptural work. Want to see some big sculptures? He’s got those. Want some smaller, more delicate pieces? Look no further. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
