Proudly hailing from the Lone Star State and working out of the borough of Brooklyn, graphic designer and custom chalk letter Dana Tanamachi is an amazing talent whose work is part illustration, part typography, and fully amazing. After graduating with a degree in Communication Design from the University of North Texas in 2007, Dana took her talents to the Big Apple to work for firms such as Spotco and Louise Fili, Ltd.
As you can imagine, there are a multitude of daunting issues that arise with chalk lettering as a commercial enterprise — it takes an extraordinary amount of planning and an even more meticulous command of motor skills, all the while understanding that one subtle mistake could result in the demise of your piece. We’ve all been there — the custom lettering project with the subtle kerning adjustments that results in that last character being about half as wide as it needs to be and in turn, ruining the entire balance of the piece. This inevitable correction, coupled with the lack of an undo button, results in a craft that only the most exacting artists can accomplish…and Dana is just that artist. Her work is absolutely incredible.
With her recent designation at a 2011 Young Gun from the Art Director’s Club and a client list that includes the likes of West Elm, Rugby Ralph Lauren, Google, The Ace Hotel, Adidas, and EveryDay with Rachael Ray, Dana is on top of the design world. To see more of her work, check out her website, web journal, Twitter, and Vimeo accounts…just a heads up, though, it will probably make you feel slightly less accomplished in whatever your current professional venture might be. Enjoy!
